Frequently asked questions
What if I forget my password?
Secret Hider has no master password and no back door, so the developer can’t recover your password or your data for you. Create encrypted backups regularly and copy them to your computer; restoring an encrypted backup still requires its password.
How do I move to a new phone?
On your old phone, create an encrypted backup in “Super Mode”, copy it to your computer with a cable or wirelessly over the same Wi-Fi network, then restore it on your new phone. The vault and the backups inside the app are not included in iCloud or computer device backups, so keep the encrypted backup files you create somewhere separate.
How do I copy a backup to my computer with a cable (Mac / Windows / Linux)?
First open Secret Hider on your phone with the super password, then connect the phone to your computer with a cable. As long as you’re signed in with the super password, the computer can see your backups, whatever screen you’re on; when you’re signed in with the normal password, it can’t. Keep the app in the foreground and the phone unlocked during the transfer: if you lock the screen or switch to another app or to normal mode, the backups are hidden right away and the transfer stops. The first time you connect to a computer, we recommend opening “Settings” → “Backups” → “Wired Transfer” and following the steps to tap “Trust” on your iPhone; while you’re on that screen, the trust prompt won’t cause the app to lock.
Mac:Open Finder, select your iPhone in the sidebar, click the Files tab, expand “Secret Hider” and drag the backup file to your computer. To restore on your phone, drag a backup from your computer back onto “Secret Hider”.
Windows:Install the Apple Devices app from the Microsoft Store (on older versions of Windows, use iTunes), select your iPhone, click Files (File Sharing in iTunes) and choose “Secret Hider” to save or add backups.
Linux:There’s no official Apple app for Linux, so you’ll need the open-source tool libimobiledevice:
- Install the tools (Ubuntu / Debian):
sudo apt install ifuse libimobiledevice-utils. On other distributions, install the packages of the same name with your package manager. - Pair:
idevicepair pair, then tap “Trust” on your iPhone. - Open the Secret Hider folder:
mkdir -p ~/SecretHider && ifuse --documents com.comeback404.SecretHider ~/SecretHider, then open the “SecretHider” folder in your home directory in your file manager. - To save a backup, copy the .mlsbackup file to another folder on your computer. Backups you copy into this folder appear in the backup list on your phone.
- When you’re done, disconnect:
fusermount -u ~/SecretHider.
If you’d rather not use the command line, use “Wireless Transfer” instead: on the same Wi-Fi network, you can download or upload backups with a web browser on any operating system.
Can’t find your backups on the computer? Unplug the cable, plug it back in, then open the “Secret Hider” file list again.
Can I recover my data after using the emergency password?
The data on your phone can’t be recovered. In the empty vault that opens, go to “Settings” → “Start Over” and set new passwords. You can then restore from an encrypted backup you saved separately on your computer earlier.
How do I restore my purchase on a new phone?
Sign in to the App Store with the same Apple Account you used to buy, then choose “Restore Purchases” on the app’s purchase screen. If you still have trouble, contact the developer using the contact options in the app.
Why does an offline app need Local Network access?
The local network is used only when “Wireless Transfer” is turned on, to exchange encrypted backups with your computer over the same Wi-Fi network. Your data is never relayed through an internet server.
